Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea creatures every year!

Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator.

Plastics require 100 to 400 years to breakdown at the landfill.

We now use about 20 times more plastic than we did 50 years ago.

Bottled water costs between $1 and $4 per gallon, and 90 percent of the cost is in the bottle, lid and label.

Plastic bottles can take up to 1000 years before they begin to decompose once buried.

Plastic Identification Numbers:

When working with plastics there is often a need to identify which particular plastic material has been used for a given product. Most consumers recognize the types of plastics by the numerical coding system created by the society of the plastics industry in the late 1980s. There are seven different types of plastic resins that are commonly used to package household products. the identification codes listed below can be found on the bottom of most plastic packaging.

(1) Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
Soda & water containers, some waterproof packaging, tennis balls.
(2) High-density polyethylene (PE)
Milk, detergent & oil bottles. toys and plastic bags. 
(3) Vinyl / polyvinyl chloride (PVC) 
Food wrap, vegetable oil bottles, blister packages. 
(4) Low-density polyethylene (LDP)
Many plastic bags. shrink wrap, garment bags. 
(5) Polypropylene
Refrigerated containers, some bags, most bottle tops,
some carpets, some food wrap, chairs (back/seats). 
(6) Polystyrene
Throwaway utensils, meat packing, protective packing. 
(7) Other.
Usually layered or mixed plastic. no recycling potential – must be landfilled.

How to Recycle Plastic?

There are a number of ways plastics are recycled. Plastics can be:

• Reused:
  Certain plastics can be reused, for example:
  Plastic Drink Bottles
  Carrier Bags
  Takeaway Containers
• What about other plastics?
  WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) based in UK; has recently completed a study that has demonstrated mixed plastics packaging (trays, tubs, pots, films etc) can be mechanically recycled and that it is both economically and environmentally effective to do so.  Further work is being conducted in this area and it it hoped that the UK will have comprehensive infrastructure for the collection, sorting and reprocessing of these valuable resources in the UK in the near future.
• The process:
  Mechanical recycling is the process of recycling plastics by:
• 1-sorting,

2-shredding,

3-washing,

4-melting,

5-pelletise.

• It is a two-stage process:
  Sorting is mainly done automatically with a manual polish; 
  Plastic is either melted down directly and moulded into a new shape, or shredded into flakes then melted down before being processed into granulates.

To produce each week’s Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down.

Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times would save 75,000 trees.

If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year!

If you had a 15-year-old tree and made it into paper grocery bags, you’d get about 700 of them. A supermarket could use all of them in under an hour! This means in one year, one supermarket goes through 60,500,000 paper bags!!

The amount of wood and paper we throw away each year is enough to heat 50,000,000 homes for 20 years.

The production of a ton of paper requires 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water and more energy per ton than glass or steel.

The average household throws away 13,000 separate pieces of paper each year. Most is packaging and junk mail.

Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air pollution!

The 17 trees saved (above) can absorb a total of 250 pounds of carbon dioxide from the air each year. Burning that same ton of paper would create 1500 pounds of carbon dioxide.

The construction costs of a paper mill designed to use waste paper is 50 to 80% less than the cost of a mill using new pulp.

Made From Recycled

Recycled paper can be made into a wide range of everyday products including:

• Magazines.
• Printing paper.
• Cardboard.
• Tissue.
• Loft insulation.

How to Recycle Paper?

Paper is one of the easiest materials to recycle. Paper is collected from our kerbside or recycling banks by local authorities and waste management companies.
Once the paper is collected it is then:

• Sorted, graded and delivered to a paper mill.
• Once at the paper mill it is added to water and then turned into pulp.
• The paper is then screened, cleaned and de-inked through a number of processes until it is suitable for papermaking.
• It is then ready to be made into new paper products such as newsprint, cardboard, packaging, tissue and office items.

Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper. All of these jars are recyclable!

The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials.

A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose -and even longer if it’s in the landfill.

Mining and transporting raw materials for glass produces about 385 pounds of waste for every ton of glass that is made. If recycled glass is substituted for half of the raw materials, the waste is cut by more than 80%.

Made From Recycled

Recycled glass can be used to make a wide range of everyday products and some that are completely unexpected, including:

• New bottles and jars.
• ‘Processed sand’ – finely ground glass used in golf course bunkers.
• ‘Glassphalt’ for road surfacing.

How to Recycle Glass?

Glass is collected from our kerbside or recycling banks by local authorities or waste management companies.

Once the glass is collected it is then:

• Taken to be reprocessed.
• It’s then crushed and contaminants are removed (mechanised colour sorting is usually undertaken at this stage if required).
• It’s now mixed with the raw materials and melted in a furnace.
• The melted material is moulded or blown into new bottles or jars.

And remember recycling two bottles saves enough energy to boil enough water for five cups of tea!

A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the grocery shelf as a new can, in as little as 60 days. That’s closed loop recycling at its finest!

Used aluminum beverage cans are the most recycled items in the U.S., but other types of aluminum, such as siding, gutters, car components, storm window frames, and lawn furniture can also be recycled.

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours — or the equivalent of half a gallon of gasoline.

More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product.

Because so many of them are recycled, aluminum cans account for less than 1% of the total U.S. waste stream, according to EPA estimates.

An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now!

There is no limit to the amount of times an aluminum can can be recycled.

We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum soda cans every year.

At one time, aluminum was more valuable than gold!

A 60-watt light bulb can be run for over a day on the amount of energy saved by recycling 1 pound of steel. In one year in the United States, the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light 18,000,000 homes!

Made From Recycled

• Used cans are recycled, made into new cans, filled and put back on the shelf in just six weeks.
• Used foil is generally recycled with other aluminium scraps such as window frames and road signs, and cast into engine components for vehicles, which makes them lighter and more fuel efficient.

HOW TO RECYCLE ALUMINUM?

Recycling aluminum uses only around five 5% of the energy and emissions needed to make it from the raw material bauxite, and as the metal can be recycled time and time again without loss of properties, getting the aluminum recycling habit is one of the best things we can do for the environment.

Aluminum drink cans are collected by almost all local authorities, and increasingly aluminum foil – such as clean ready meal trays, dairy lidding, chocolate foil and wrapping and cooking foil – is also collected.

The complete recycling process is to:

• Shred the whole cans, removing any coloured coating
• Melt the shreds in a huge furnace
• Pour the molten metal into ingot casts to set.   Each ingot can be made into around 1.5m cans.

Aluminum foil is a different alloy, and is usually recycled with other aluminum scraps to make cast items such as engine components, where it makes a big contribution to making vehicles lighter and more energy efficient.

One tree produces the oxygen for just 3 humans alive.

To produce 1 ton of virgin fiber paper, 17 to 31 trees are used.

About 3500 t of waste per day was disposed in the landfill in Bahrain in 2008.

More than 4000 t of waste per day will be disposed in the landfill in Bahrain in 2009.

At least 50% of the waste is recyclable. Disposal could be reduced to under 2000t per day.

You pay more for the Cola-Can than for the content. And it can be recycled 100%.

A PET bottle made out of recycling saves 75% of energy and resources.

Recycling paper causes 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution.

Recycling 1 aluminum can saves enough energy to run your TV for 3 hours.

Recycling 1 ton of aluminum cans conserves the equivalent of 36 barrels of oil.

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS

Recycling is an easy step you can take to help the environment in three main ways:

Reduce the amount of rubbish sent to the landfill

Reusing and recycling items means that less waste has to be buried in the ground in landfill sites, plus we save valuable resources by turning waste into new products! Burying less rubbish means we have to build fewer landfill sites, which frees up another important resource: land.

Save enegry and raw materials

Recycling uses less energy than making items from scratch, for example, recycling an aluminum can saves 95% of the energy needed to make a completely new can.

Help tackle climate change

Reducing the energy used to make and transport products means less carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Recycling also cuts the amounts of methane, another powerful greenhouse gas, which can be given off by biodegradable materials as they rot under pressure in landfill sites..

LANDFILLS

Landfills are massive holes in the earth and often located on the outskirts of cities and towns where the waste is eventually kept at and its contents slowly decompose over the course of several centuries. In the past, sites were simply covered with earth and the trash left to its own devices. Modern landfill sites, however, are better managed; they’re lined and capped to stop toxic chemicals from the trash leaking into the surrounding earth and polluting nearby water sources. Built-in systems capture escaping gases and liquids, with some experiments now taking place to recapture energy released by the decomposition process. Suitable sites for landfills are becoming scarce, though, and concern still exists about the potential for leakage, especially groundwater contamination.

GUIDELINES TO USE OUR MARKETING MATERIALS

This document introduces the Recycling for Charity Schools Marketing materials and provides simple guidance on how to use them.

AWARENESS POSTERS

There are a range of awareness posters which schools can use. These are aimed at the following groups:

• primary school pupils
• secondary school pupils
• school staff and
• “Why Recycle?” posters which you can choose to use with any audience.

The awareness posters can be displayed in classrooms, on notice boards, in corridors, foyers, offices, staffrooms, halls, or anywhere else in the school where there are members of the school community who you would like to encourage to take part in the recycling scheme.

The posters can be downloaded and printed off using a colour printer. We recommend that they are printed A3 size using recycled paper.

Schools can personalise Primary School Poster 3 by adding a photograph of the recycling containers which are used at their school together with the recycling monitors, or similar pupils and members of staff that are involved in looking after the school’s recycling scheme.

Please make sure that you use a 6×4” landscape photograph to fit the space on the poster. This can either be printed on a colour printer and stuck onto the poster; or taken to a photo processing shop to be processed. Some shops will be able to print the photograph onto adhesive paper to make attaching it to the poster even easier.

RECYCLING POINT SIGNAGE

Indoor recycling bin stickers:

The indoor bin stickers have been designed for use on the bins or boxes used to collect recycling inside school buildings, e.g. in classrooms, offices and staff rooms. The stickers help to make a school’s recycling containers more visible and easily identifiable.

There is a separate sticker for each material (e.g. paper, cans, food waste) and each sticker has a ‘tick and cross’ section to show what can and cannot be accepted in your individual school’s recycling scheme. This helps to make sure that everyone using the bins is aware of what can and cannot be accepted in them and can reduce contamination of recycling bins (i.e. the wrong materials being put into recycling bins).

Please note: the items listed in the ‘tick and cross’ sections on the online stickers are examples only and should be replaced by information on the individual school’s recycling scheme.

The bin stickers have been made available in Word, PDF and AI (Adobe Illustrator) format.

• If you have access to design services we recommend that you use the PDF or AI version of the stickers. Acrobat reader, the software that enables you to read PDFs, is free to download from www.adobe.com.
• If you do not have access to design services you can download a simple Word version of the stickers and amend the ‘tick and cross’ section to reflect what can and cannot be accepted in the school’s recycling bins. To amend the Word template:

• View the document in “print layout”;
• Using the mouse, select the words in the ‘tick and cross’ sections that you wish to change;
• Type in the words for each item using Arial font in size 18;
• Each item should be separated with a bullet point. Please copy a bullet point from the existing list and paste each time you wish to add an item.

We recommend printing these stickers A4 size, and that you use crack-back plastic for ease of use and durability. If you are not able to print the stickers on adhesive paper you could use a colour printer and consider laminating them to increase their durability.

Indoor recycling point signs:

The recycling point signs have been designed to complement the indoor bin stickers and can be mounted on a wall above the recycling containers to make the recycling points more visible and easily identifiable.

We recommend printing these signs A4 size on recycled paper.

Outdoor bin stickers:

The outdoor bin stickers have been designed for use on the external recycling bins used to store recycling outside the school buildings. There is a separate sticker for each material (e.g. paper, cans, food waste). Again, they can help to make containers more visible and easily identifiable.

We recommend printing these stickers A4 size using UV proof ink and that you use crack-back plastic (laminated on one side) for ease of use and durability.

Recycle here signs:

The recycle here signs can be used to clearly mark recycling points around the school:

Indoors e.g. on walls, notice boards etc. to visually highlight recycling points or group together recycling point signs and awareness posters.

Outdoors e.g. mounted on a post or on a wall above or alongside recycling bins.

We recommend printing these signs on recycled paper for internal use and producing a metal sign for external use.
